NSTU Representatives

Each educational site within the Lunenburg County Local must elect at least one NSTU Representative.

  • Schools with 26–30 teachers may elect up to two representatives
  • Schools with more than 50 teachers may elect up to three representatives
  • Each site is also entitled to elect an equal number of alternate representatives

Role of the NSTU Representative

NSTU Representatives play a vital role in communication, advocacy, and member support at the school level.

Key Responsibilities

Representative duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Communicating NSTU Information
    Ensure timely distribution and posting of information from both the provincial NSTU and the Local.
  • Supporting Member Inquiries
    Direct member questions and concerns to the appropriate Local or provincial contacts.
  • Managing Membership Information
    Coordinate the annual collection and submission of membership registry data within the school.
  • Maintaining Communication with Administration
    Keep the school principal informed about NSTU matters and request time on staff meeting agendas for updates.
  • Supporting New Teachers
    Help new teachers become informed, engaged, and active NSTU members.
  • Attending Meetings
    Participate in Local and General Council meetings, bring forward staff concerns, and report back to colleagues.
  • Conducting Votes
    Oversee and facilitate school-based votes (e.g., elections, contract ratification).
  • Promoting Professional Unity
    Encourage collaboration and solidarity within the teaching profession.

1. How do I become a school representative?

Each school selects its NSTU Representative annually. If you are interested in the role, speak with your principal or current representative about the selection process.

2. I’ve become a representative—what should I do next?

Start by letting colleagues know that you are the NSTU Representative for your school. Encourage them to come to you with questions or concerns, and be prepared to connect them with the appropriate supports.

You should:

  • Attend Local meetings to stay informed

  • Share relevant updates with staff and administration

  • Bring forward questions or concerns from your colleagues

3. Do I have to attend meetings? How often?

Each school should be represented at every Local meeting. If you are unable to attend, arrange for an alternate representative or follow up afterward to stay informed.
